Closed meeting held between SCS supt., teachers

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A closed door meeting between the Shelby County Schools superintendent and concerned teachers. What is being called an "internal staff meeting" got underway Wednesday evening in the board auditorium. It is not open to the public or media.

The school district does confirm that teacher representatives from each school were invited to attend. Action News 5 was told it will be a question and answer type of meeting, addressing everything from salary discrepancies, insurance, evaluations, and terminations.

It is reportedly the first time Superintendent Dorsey Hopson has called such a meeting.

"He needs to have a conversation with the employees, starting with teachers, addressing their concerns, and allaying their fears that they are not respected or valued in this district," said Memphis Education Association President Keith Williams.

On Tuesday night, Superintendent Hopson told the school board that, legally, the unified district has three years to "level" pay and other discrepancies between former city and county teachers.

Action News 5's Jason Miles is working to talk with Shelby County Schools teachers about what they hope to hear inside the meeting. Tune into the news at 10 p.m. for the latest on the meeting.
