Boyfriend charged in murder of teacher

(WMC-TV) – Police charged 30-year-old Carl Smith with first degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Bronsha Lewis.

Memphis police say Lewis was found dead in her Evergreen-Vollintine apartment at 961 Oakmont Place. Her car and cell phone were both missing.

The car was found after being involved in a car accident Saturday with a Ford Mustang and a tractor-trailer on I-40. Smith was found being treated at Delta Medical Center.

Now, the slain teacher's family is saying they believed he was responsible for her death all along.

Heartbroken family members of Bronsha Lewis pointed the finger at her boyfriend, Carl Smith.

In old posts on her Facebook page, she called him "My Boo" and proclaimed "He is soo [sic] precious when he is aslleep [sic]!!"

But in April 2012, he was twice arrested for assaulting her. The charges were both dropped on June 5, 2013, when his diversion ended.

On the scene Friday, homicide investigators put out a BOLO for Lewis' missing car, a 2003 gold Chevy Impala with Tennessee tag 297NMF.

According to a brief affidavit of complaint, Smith "gave a statement of admission." He is in jail without bond and is due in court Wednesday morning.

Family says Lewis was a special needs teacher at Idlewild and Bruce Elementary. Lewis' family talked to Action News 5 in this interview, click here to watch.
