Two injured when RV overturned in Williamson County

FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -

Two people were airlifted to Vanderbilt after their RV overturned in Williamson County on Saturday morning.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the 1997 RV was traveling east on Highway 96 when it veered off the road and down an embankment.

Gordon Liske pulled up moments after the crash.

"We decided to stop because we noticed it was still running," Liske said. "We heard it was still running. That was my goal - was to get it shut off."

But that was no easy task. Liske said just getting down to the RV was difficult, and there was no way into it.

"The tree, the way it had stopped it, it had totally caved in the passenger side of the vehicle," Liske said.

Liske said he and another man, who stopped to help, finally found the engine and got it shut off.

"We were afraid of carbon monoxide fumes as well as a fire starting," Liske said. "It may have caused an explosion. So that was the most important thing for us.'

All the while, 72-year-old Karen Brown remained pinned in the driver's seat. Rescue crews said James Brown was also stuck in the passenger's seat and still alive, even after a tree crashed on it. It took crews nearly 2 1/2 hours to get the Browns out.

Animal Control was called in to provide care to the Browns' three injured small dogs.

Liske said he left shortly after first responders arrived. They were headed to a birthday party when they decided to pull over. Liske said he hopes others will follow in their actions.

"We just want people to do the right thing," Liske said.

The Browns are from Albuquerque, NM.

THP said it is unknown if either victim was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

THP is still investigating the accident.
