Raleigh residents want historic cemetery cleaned up

(WMC-TV) - The Old Raleigh Cemetery is a historic marker that greets all who enter, but many in the community are concerned about its appearance.

"It was just sad to see something that old and historic torn up like that," said concerned citizen Steven Dacus.

Dacus called the Action News 5 Investigators hotline and after a recent visit that left him flabbergasted.

"It's been totally, totally abandoned," he said.

Kevin Brooks and the Raleigh Community Council organized clean-up efforts in the past.

They even set up a Facebook account dedicated to rallying the community for what promised to be a very rough reclamation project.

Brooks says those efforts fizzled when manpower and supplies that were promised did not pan out in full. But he hopes to ramp up the process again when the weather gets cooler in mid-to-late October.

"It bothers me for anybody who has got family out there or even if they don't have family," said Dacus. "I just think they might be able to allow the dead to rest in peace and people ought to respect their final testing place."

But even those who care about the place say consistent care may be nothing more than a pipe dream in a cemetery that is becoming a no man's land.

The Raleigh Community Council says they would always open for volunteers to help them out next time there is a clean-up.
