Woman accused of defrauding Justin Timberlake's stepfather

(WMC-TV) - Fraud investigators say victims often get ripped off by those closest to them. Police say the adage applies for one of the most famous families in the Mid-South.

"Quite a bit of identity theft is by close, trusted individuals," said Andy Wilson, who is a fraud investigator.

Investigators say that money often runs thicker than blood, but in Jane Harless' case, the family tree happens to include Justin Timberlake -- by marriage.

"Doesn't matter who you are, doesn't matter who you're related to," said Chip Washington, Shelby County Sheriff's Office. "You break the law, you pay for it."

Jane's brother is Paul Harless, who is part developer of Mirimichi, part owner of the Memphis Grizzlies, and happens to be Justin Timberlake's stepfather.

According to an affidavit of complaint, Harless worked for her brother and sister-in-law. She used their checking account to write herself checks and signed her brother's name.

Investigators say Jane stole $64,700 from her family between January 2011 and August 2013 by forging names on 121 checks.

"Some of the family members noticed some discrepancies and then it was sort of easy from that point to sort of see exactly what happened," said Washington.

Jane Harless is being held at Shelby County Jail East with no bond until a general sessions judge can hold a full hearing.

"It's never comfortable when someone that you put in your trust violates that trust," added Washington.
