Gun found near high school football field, student in custody

(WMC-TV) - Memphis police officers found a gun on the Kirby High School campus near the football field. The report sent the school into a temporary lockdown Tuesday morning.

One student is in the custody of Memphis Police Department. According to MPD, officers responded to a drug call at the school. While they were there, they received a tip that a student may be in possession of a firearm.

"I just got a phone call and heard on Facebook that Kirby was on lockdown," said parent Shunda Harris.

Shelby County Schools reports the school was placed on lockdown as a precaution while the student was questioned and the campus was searched.

"The kid was taken off campus and everything in handcuffs, which we hate that, but yet again we can't have anybody having anything on campus or near campus that could compromise our students' safety," said school principal Dr. Reginald Williams.

There were several family members coming in and out of the school after hearing about the gun and lockdown.

"I pulled one of them out, and I put them back in once I found out that the suspect was already gone," said grandparent Glenda Graham.

School leaders say parents will get a letter informing them of Tuesday's incident. The lockdown on Kirby High School has since been lifted. A total of four guns have been found on four Shelby County School campuses this year.
