Kroger reveals plans for Midtown store renovation

(WMC-TV) - Kroger got an approval that has been months in the making. The plans for the redesign of its store in Midtown gained the approval of neighborhood groups.

With that, the company is now releasing its renderings for the store renovation, which is scheduled to be finished in 2015. Click here to see the renderings.

Some changes that shoppers will notice will be many more windows, a new main entrance from the east side of the building, and a lot more space.

"The present store is on selling square footage about 28-29,000 square feet," said Kroger spokesperson Joe Bell. "The new one will be just over 50, just over about 51,000 so it's not quite double the space but pretty close."

The renderings are ten months in the making. The company met with neighborhood groups and community members in that time to get a thumbs up.

"We really spent a lot of due diligence addressing specific concerns," said Bell.

In addition to growing almost twice as large, there will be more parking spaces and a big emphasis on landscaping to soften its appearance.

"This store is going to be unique to anything not only our division has, but it's going to be unique to anything the Kroger company has," said Bell.

The store is expected to open in early 2015; the plans are for it to close about two months prior to opening.
