Maury County couple dead in apparent murder-suicide

Officers in Maury County are investigating a traumatic and tragic situation for one local family. It appears a man shot and killed his wife then turned the gun on himself Thursday night.

The couple's three children were home at the time, and their 13-year-old child may have even witnessed the shooting.

Neighbors say the family has lived in the Santa Fe community for a long time, and the husband and wife were high school sweethearts.

"They were great people. It's just a tragedy that shouldn't have happened," said family member Kathy Dexter.

Investigators believe Matthew Johnson shot his wife in the kitchen of their home on Fly Road before shooting himself in the living room.

The sheriff says the department had been called to the location multiple times for domestic situations in the past.

"His family was his whole world," said bartender Barry Beckemeier. "I just wish he would have handled it differently."

The family's children - ages 2, 5 and 13 - remain in the custody of another family member. Several relatives were at the house Friday to gather the children's personal items and clothing, as they will likely not be returning to the home for quite some time.
