(WMC-TV) - Cemetery concerns Action News 5 first exposed weeks ago are finally getting resolved. A judge promised a permanent solution Thursday.
Environmental court judge Larry Potter paid a personal visit to the cemeteries in question before the hearing. He said he had never seen cemeteries in as bad a shape as Mt. Carmel and Hollywood cemeteries in South Memphis.
"Thirty-one years on the bench," said Potter. "I did not have any concept as to the nature of the problem until I went. The problems are massive"
But not impossible to fix, he said, with a proper plan. Two locally owned lawn care companies have already volunteered to help clean up free of charge, and the county has committed inmate labor.
Families who turned to the media for attention were relieved to finally get some action.
"The owners abandoned it as of July 1, which was a good thing because up until this point the government couldn't deal with it," said concerned family member Alice Waller.
She and others look forward to a more properly maintained final resting place for their family members, including legendary Tom Lee.
"Those people who lived in this city and worked in this city and helped this city, then died in this city and were buried in this city deserve no less," said Potter.
All parties plan to meet in the coming weeks to formulate a strategy. The next court date is November 7.
