Enrollment to begin for health care act

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - The battle continues Sunday over the fate of the Affordable Health Care Act. Yet, no matter what happens on Capitol Hill, enrollment will begin Tuesday for the country's new health insurance plan.

Whether or not the government shuts down, the president is asking all Americans to enroll in the Affordable Health Care Act.

"These marketplaces will be open for business on Tuesday. No matter what," stated president Barack Obama.

Memphis Congressman Steve Cohen said the plan will mean changes for everyone. So, the insured and the uninsured should begin collecting information now.

"Everyone needs to sign up. It's the law. You have from October 1st to March 1st to pick an exchange and the law takes effect as of January 1st," declared Cohen.

An exchange is the place to sign up Tuesday for the new health insurance program. There are several different ways to do it including: online, phone, live chat, or even in person.

"They'll have insurance programs that they can compare the health providers and health benefits and they can choose which provider is best for them," mentioned Cohen.

The process can be completed in three steps: check your eligibility, compare plans, and then pick a plan. The uninsured have five months to enroll and get benefits in 2014.

"If they don't buy coverage by the end of March, though, they'll have to wait until next year to purchase plans," observed Blue Cross-Blue Shield representative Bruce Allen.

While providers are still sorting out details for available plans, a new federal report claims rates in most states will be lower than expected.
