Crooks take $50,000 in jewelry in Murfreesboro heist

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

Police in Murfreesboro are on the hunt for the crooks who committed a high-dollar jewelry heist over the weekend that investigators said was well-planned.

It only took about two minutes for burglars to break into the store, smash through display cases and grab about $50,000 in jewelry.

"It seemed to be timed," said Platinum and Gold Jewelers owner Charles Settle. "The gentlemen knew just how much time they had."

With the burglar alarm blaring, the whole crime was caught on video.

"They got us for quite a bit of stuff and damaged a lot of stuff," Settle said. "Granted, we didn't have everything in the case, our repairs and customers' jewelry was in the safe."

The heist happened Sunday around midnight at the store on North Thompson Lane. And the crooks even shielded the store from the nearby busy street with a huge rental truck, so police don't believe these burglars were rookies.

"This seems to be a well-planned, well thought-out crime, as indicated by the quickness of the event," said Murfreesboro police spokesman Sgt. Kyle Evans.

The rental truck was found a few miles away on Interstate 24, where police believe they may have gotten into another vehicle.

"Everything from the targeting the store to their escape route was planned and executed accordingly," Evans said.

The owner has already taken all the necessary precautions, including high-tech surveillance cameras and shatter-resistant glass on display cases. Now, he is planning to add even more security measures, including a night watchman.

"I'm certainly upset that this happened, but, unfortunately, it does happen in this business," Settle said.

In the meantime, workers have cleaned out the rest of the displays until repairs are made. They are just hoping the crooks are caught soon.

Settle believes the stolen items will be sold out of state or over the internet, so he's been surfing the web in hopes of finding some of the items being sold.
