Some MS FEMA workers recalled

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Some Mid-South furloughed workers are being recalled to help prepare for Tropical Storm Karen.

The storm is expected to reach hurricane strength by Friday and hit the gulf coast Saturday and Sunday.

Officials reported 86% of Federal Emergency Management Agency's workers were furloughed due to lack of funding caused by the partial government shutdown. Presently, the agency has not yet released the number of employees recalled.

FEMA representatives not furloughed are warning Mississippians to be prepared to leave their homes. Bureaucrats are concerned Karen could be a strong topical storm when it makes landfall.

"We're preparing for a category one and deploying assets that's consistent with our preparation for that," stated FEMA Director Robert Latham.

Magnolia State Governor Phil Bryant has already declared a state of emergency.

Schools have a few hours to decide whether to cancel the Friday night football games.

Coast casinos are communicating with local emergency officials to determine whether they will need to close.
