Accused arsonist to appear in court

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South man, who is accused of setting an assisted living facility on fire, will appear in court Friday.

Memphian Lenel Peoples, 55, is facing charges of burning down his own apartment after being evicted.

According to the affidavit, no one was injured in the fire. However, fire fighters did find flame, heat, and smoke damages to the sixth floor apartment.

The Community Manager at 1081 Court Apartments, Towanda Matthews, told detectives Peoples was being ousted because he was careless with cooking materials.

A witness stated Peoples told him he was "going to burn down (the) apartment".

The fire investigator determined the fire began on the bed in the bedroom.

The blaze caused around $50,000 in damages.

Peoples is being held on a $75,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m.
