(WMC-TV) - The daily walk to school turned into an all out sprint as a teen had to run from a man trying to solicit her for sex, police say.

Carlton Wicks, 45, is charged with one count of solicitation of a minor.

According to an affidavit of complaint, the 17-year-old girl was walking to Hamilton High school at 7:30 a.m. Thursday when Wicks came out of his house and asked her, "What's your name baby, I'm looking for a friend?"

She told him she was not interested and he allegedly started to follow her, saying, "Come on baby, these twenties about to jump outta my pocket. You know you wanna get them! Come on in my house with me."

The teen took off running to school and told the school resource officer, who found Wicks at the corner of Wilson Street and East Person Avenue.

Raymond Govan, who lives nearby, says Elvis Presley Boulevard is part of the problem. He says women work the street all day, all night, and men have a habit of making audible offers.

"Most of the time, you hear things like that around here. You just overlook it because it happens on an everyday basis," said Govan. "It's nothing new."

But in this case, police say the teen was wearing her school uniform and "has a youthful appearance and a reasonable person would know she is a school age child."

According to MPD, the teen was not injured.

Wicks is in jail on $10,000 bond. He is due in court next week.
