Events help run Shelby Farms at $7,123 per day

(WMC-TV) - It is one of Memphis' treasures: Shelby Farms Park. It is a place where you can enjoy the great outdoors, but it doesn't come at a cheap price.

Shelby Farms is the largest urban park in the country and it takes a lot of money to keep it open every day. A spooky fundraiser is kicking off Friday and all money donated will go toward maintaining the park and keeping it open.

"It takes a little more than $2 million a year to run the park, which breaks down to about $7,123 per day to care for the park," said Rebecca Dailey, Shelby Farms.

There are all sorts of events held at Shelby Farms, but some cost money. Dailey says the money raised at events like "Spooky Nights" goes to the park, so that it does not turn into a real-life ghost land.

"The funds that we raise are what ensure that it stays a treasure for the community, not only today, but long term," said Dailey.

Jim Ralston is a frequent visitor at Shelby Farms. While he has not attended "Spooky Nights," he has been to "Starry Nights." He is happy to learn that the money he pays to go is being used to pay for some of the trails he likes to ride.

"I think that's the right way to do. It's a civic asset and to have the events and use the money for the support of the park makes sense to me," he said.

"Spooky Nights" starts Friday, October 4 at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 per person.
