(WMC-TV) – Finding a parking spot in Midtown Memphis just got a little easier, and for the month of October using the new parking garage will be free.

Overton Square's multimillion dollar parking garage is now open and offers 451 parking spaces. Several new restaurants and other business helped bring new life to the area, and the garage aims to facilitate the need for parking spaces.

"I think a lot of people have been hesitant to park at Overton Square because parking's been an issue. It's been hard to park on the street," said Overton Square business owner Olivia Lomax of Delta Groove Yoga.

Loeb Properties is managing garage operations for the city of Memphis. The city purchased the land from Loeb in 2012 and construction has been underway for the last year. The city built a storm water detention facility that sits below the garage to keep Midtown from flooding.

While parking is free in October, a $3 flat fee will begin in November between the hours of 6 p.m. and 4 a.m.

"It's just been tremendous. I can sit down and enjoy that cup of coffee before I come to work instead of losing an extra 10 or 15 minutes trying to rush and find a parking spot," said Bar Louie employee Theron Evans.

Daytime parking will be free, according to a spokesperson for Loeb Properties.
