ShapeUp ShowDown: Meet the trainer

(WMC-TV) – NBC'S "The Biggest Loser" premieres its new season next Tuesday, October 15th on WMC-TV and here on Action News 5, we're getting into the weight loss battle – Mid-South style!

We're inviting you to take part in our "ShapeUp ShowDown," a local challenge for those of you who want help taking off the pounds and getting fit.

This free 90-day program kicks off with a casting call just a few days from now.

First, meet the man who's heading up the fitness side of our team.

"I think this is a great project to help a lot of Memphians to get in shape fast, with a lot of direction and help, "said David Ferguson, the owner/operator of Memphis Judo Jiu-Jitsu and Fitness Kickboxing in Bartlett.

The mixed martial arts champion and instructor is talking about the workouts he's planned for "ShapeUp ShowDown" contestants.

We asked about what kinds of things contestants will being doing. "Everything! You name it, they are gonna be doing just about everything you can imagine for fitness," Ferguson said.

He also said, "We're gonna do some fitness kickboxing training. And a lot of core exercises, as well.

"We have a great circuit training situation for them to train in where they're gonna do tires and sledge hammers, something very non-traditional, kettle bells. They're gonna do stuff with ropes, battling ropes.

"The workout needs to change all the time so they can get the maximum benefits out of this. It can't get boring, it can't get stale. They have to have something fresh all the time," Ferguson told Action News 5.

And work the entire body.

He said, "Holistic fitness is basically what we're after."

If you chose to accept the ShapeUp ShowDown challenge, Ferguson suggests you leave behind all your past battles of the bulge struggles and disappointments and bring a positive attitude.

"This is not going to be easy. It's gonna be challenging, no doubt about this, but if they're up for the challenge and have a positive mental attitude about it, they will succeed," said Ferguson.

Ferguson understands a lot of the contestants have probably battled their weight for a long time.

But, if you make this challenge a priority in your life, it might just be the spark or motivation you need to reach your weight and fitness goals.
