Mom of 5-year-old hurt in crash tested for driving under influence of medications

Mo(WMC-TV) - A young girl critically injured when her mom's SUV crashed head-on into another car underwent surgery Wednesday. The 5-year-old's mother is being investigated because police believe she may have been driving under the influence of prescription medications when the crash happened.

Flashing blue lights from accident investigators lined Highway 305 in DeSoto County Wednesday morning as the little girl hurt in the crash clings to life at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.

Al Boudreau was outside when an SUV collided head-on with a Ford Mustang.

"I was just sitting on the porch watching the grass grow and all of a sudden there's sirens and everything else, traffic got backed up," said Boudreau.

A spokesperson for Mississippi Highway Patrol confirmed they obtained a warrant to draw blood from the girl's mother, who was driving the SUV, because investigators believe she may have been driving under the influence of several prescription medications. Criminal charges could be filed depending on the results of the tests.

A preliminary report from state troopers says that two teenagers in the Ford Mustang reported that the mother driving the SUV crossed into their southbound lane. The teens told authorities they tried to avoid the vehicle by getting in the north lane, but the SUV swerved back and they collided.

The blood test results could take weeks to come back. The mother has not been charged.

According to the highway patrol, the 5-year-old girl was the only one hurt in the accident.
