Sheriff under investigation for domestic incident

(WMC-TV) – A Mid-South sheriff is not investigating tonight. Instead, he is under investigation for a domestic dispute.

An order of protection spells out what a woman alleges Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork did. It launched a criminal investigation by the Jackson Police Department.

In an ironic twist, Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork is being investigated by the Jackson Police Department after a call of a domestic disturbance at the home of Sharon Sangster, an employee of the Sheriff's Department.

"Anytime you're in a higher office you supposed to be people of integrity," Woolfork said.

Sangster said in a petition for an order of protection that the sheriff started calling her numerous times on Thursday.  She said the last time he was at her backdoor and that he wanted to get back with her.

Sangster claimed she had an affair with the married Woolfork.  She said when she left him he became angry. When she said she did not love him anymore and she would not agree to be with him, he grabbed her arm. She said during the altercation her arm was bruised and her nails were broken.

Jackson police did not arrest Sangster or Woolfork.

"On-scene investigators were unable to determine who was actually the primary aggressor which is required by law for us to facilitate making an arrest in a domestic abuse type situation," Jackson Police Chief Gill Kendrick said.

Chief Kendrick said his officers saw no visible injuries on Sangster, but they are investigating.

The Sheriff issued a statement saying he did not act inappropriately. He said the whole thing is politically motivated and is tied to his cell phone that was stolen.

The Jackson Police chief said the criminal division is investigating the case. Sangster would not answer her door when Action News 5 knocked. Her request for an order of protection from the sheriff is scheduled for October 23rd.
