MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A local principal is being recognized for her exceptional leadership, student achievement gains, and successful environment.
Sharon McNary is the principal at Richland Elementary School. She visits Washington later in October to be inducted into the 2013's national class of distinguished principals
Only 61 principals were chosen nationwide for this honor.
Every day at Richland Elementary is a good day for Principal Sharon McNary. She wakes up every morning looking forward to seeing her students.
"They're just forgiving little children. They're just always happy and that's no matter what. That's the best part of the whole job," explained Sharon McNary.
A graduate of Germantown High School and the University of Memphis, McNary did not begin wanting to work in education. Her first goal was to work in law enforcement.
"Well, actually when I lived in New Jersey I wanted to be a police officer. (Specifically,) I wanted to be a New York City police officer," continued McNary.
However, a college paper she wrote on special education lead her to teaching positions at Avon Lennox and Kingsbury. After that came the assistant principal position at Richland and in 2004 she was hired as principal.
Over the years, she has developed a management style that is hands on. Yet, it leaves room for teacher, student, and parent input.
"We are all in this together. So, I think that's the one thing that stands out that any decision I make involves others," declared McNary.
She said getting inducted in the 2013 class of distinguished principals just makes her want to work harder.
"I'm very honored and humbled to receive this award," said McNary.
McNary and the other principals will receive the award on October 24th and 25th.
