Council looks at Beale Street expansion

(WMC-TV) - The Memphis City Council will tackle a host of issues on Tuesday including the expansion of America's Most Iconic Street.

Memphis Mayor A. C. Wharton says the current boundaries of the entertainment section of Beale Street are too constrictive.

He wants to extend it from Fourth Street, down another three blocks to the Mississippi River. On Tuesday, we will hear how this plan came together.

The City of Memphis will have control of Beale Street within two months and that's when the city will get to work.

Mayor Wharton says the district already has plenty to offer, but there's loads of untapped potential. Business owners along Beale Street say they agree with the mayor.

Ty Agee with the Beale Street Merchants Association said, "However it works, more business down here makes it better for us."

"The most active part of Beale Street ought to be down there where historic Beale Street meets the mighty Mississippi River. That's our Broadway. That's our Times Square. And we're going to take it there," said Mayor Wharton.

The Mayor will make a presentation to the city council explaining how the legal battle to control Beale Street was finalized. We'll let you know what happens tonight on Action News 5 at 5.
