Congress passes bill to reopen government

(WMC-TV) – Congress voted to approve a bipartisan deal ending a federal government shutdown and raising the debt ceiling, which is the Treasury Department's borrowing authority.

The hard-fought agreement between Democratic and Republican Senate leaders came on the 16th day that many federal agencies were closed due to a lack of funding from Congress.

President Barack Obama said at the White House while addressing the nation Wednesday night that he will sign the agreement immediately.

Obama ordered the federal government to shut down September 30 shortly before midnight. The shutdown order came after the Senate killed a third bill by the House of Representatives that would fund the government and avert a shutdown, but it also called for compromises to the Affordable Care Act.
