MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A new ticket system for entry into the Memphis Madness basketball event is not seen as a slam dunk by many basketball fans. In fact, many people say the new system is madness in itself.

This year the University of Memphis athletics department is requiring everyone to have a ticket to get into FedExForum for the preseason celebration.

Fans formed a line outside the arena Thursday morning for the free tickets, but they were gone in less than one hour.

"I came here to get five tickets but you know they're sold out already and it's 10:30," said Angela Owens.

The tickets are free, but people hoping to get one had to be at the right place at the right time.

"We had to go to Ashley Furniture, but I have to work so I didn't have time to go there," said University of Memphis student Jessica Shields.

The University of Memphis says capacity crowds at their last four Madness events is the reason for the change. For some, it will mean missing a longtime tradition that has grown in popularity.

"I guess I should have got up earlier," said Owens.

If you were not able to get tickets to Memphis Madness Thursday morning, you have one more chance. The final batch of tickets will be handed out at FedExForum Friday beginning at 5 p.m., but as proven Thursday, fans will want to arrive early. Tickets handed out Friday will be limited to one per person.

It is expected to be a full house at game time. Entertainment will begin on the plaza at 4 p.m. Friday and the doors open at 6:30 p.m.
