HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

More than two dozen of the best barbecue chefs from our area and beyond gathered in the Hub City Saturday to serve their special recipes for beef, chicken and pork as part of the 2nd annual Downtown BBQ Showdown.

It was held at Walthall Park and was a fund raising event for the Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood Assn.

Attendees enjoyed all sorts of barbecue dishes while listening to live music.

It was also a competitive event, with cash prizes awarded to the best beef brisket, pork shoulder/butt, chicken and pork ribs.

A $1,500 cash prize was also presented to a grand champion.

"Downtown is a community in and of itself, everybody knows each other," said Andrea Saffle, president of the Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood Assn. "All these guys here may not have known each other when they got here, but they're friends now," she said.

"It's great thing they're trying to do, build up the downtown area, tourism and the parks and stuff here," said Russ Cameron, a barbecue chef from Picayune. "All the proceeds go to that. I think it's great," he said.

"I think it's fantastic," said Dr. James Griffin of Hattiesburg, one of hundreds of residents who attended. "All the booths have excellent food, barbecue falling off the bone, sauces are excellent. It's wonderful," he said.

A total of 25 competitors participated this year. In 2012, 16 took part.
