Mid-Southerners participate in Block Party for Peace

(WMC-TV) – Action News Five is committed to addressing the concerns of the communities it serves. On Saturday, the "Five Listens Tour" went back on the road to North Memphis for the annual Block Party for Peace.

WMC's "Five Listens Tour" stopped at the Ed Rice Community Center Saturday as part of the Annual Block Party for Peace.

The Action News Five team, including Ursula Madden and Andy Wise listened to the concerns of the Frayser community where fighting crime is a top priority.

Frayser resident, Danika Baker said, "This is a really good area, this is a really beautiful area. My parents grew up here, I grew up here."

Danika Baker wanted to know why we do what we do. She said, "Because the media makes Frayser look so bad."

Action News Five's Ursula Madden explained sometimes negative news is the first step toward positive change.

"It was something that was painful for us to expose, but something that was necessary to expose to wake people up to the situation in the area," Madden explained.

Exchanging ideas, understanding one another and working together to find solutions is what Five Listens is all about.

The Block Party continues Sunday at the Ed Rice Community Center at 2907 North Watkins Street. It's free and open to all.
