U of M linebacker earns conference, national recognition

(WMC-TV) - University of Memphis junior linebacker Ryan Coleman earned conference and national recognition Monday for his NCAA record-tying play against SMU Saturday.

Coleman is named National Linebacker of the Week and National Defensive Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards. He is also named to the American Athletic Conference's five-player honor roll.

Coleman became the first NCAA Division 1A player since 2004 to recover two fumbles and return both for touchdowns. That has only happened three other times in history.

The junior linebacker stripped a runner of the ball and scored a 15 yard touchdown in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, he returned a fumbled punt return 19 yards for a second score. Coleman also had four tackles in the game, which ended in a 34-29 Tiger loss.

The U of M gets back in action Wednesday, October 30 on national TV against Cincinnati at the Liberty Bowl.
