Survey shows over 5,000 bullying cases in TN

(WMC-TV) - Alarming numbers are surfacing in Tennessee as a shocking number of students admit to experiencing bullying.

A new report sponsored by Senators Curtiss and Ketron has revealed 7,555 cases of bullying were reported in the 2012 to 2013 school year. However, upon investigation, officials discovered the actual number of bullying cases was 5,478.

In essence, 72 percent of the cases reported were validated.

Senator Ketron is alarmed by the numbers.

"The numbers in this report are very alarming. This is a systemic problem that we need to address not only in our schools, but in our homes, churches, community organizations, on the ball field and elsewhere," stated Ketron.

In Shelby County alone, 265 cases of bullying were reported. All of these cases were confirmed.

Curiss hopes this information will encourage officials to make a change.

"This is so sad. I am very pleased that this information is now coming forward so we can do something about it," Cuiss said.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.
