MLGW warns against scam involving prank callers

(WMC-TV) - Memphis Light Gas and Water has issued a scam warning against prank callers.

It is the second time in about a month MLGW is putting out a warning about a scammer trying to use the utility's good name to rip off its commercial and business customers.

This time the caller somehow managed to gain another level of perceived authenticity.

MLGW says over the weekend a commercial customer got a call from someone claiming to be from MLGW. The caller claimed the utilities would be cut off unless the customer made a payment using a Green Dot money card.

The caller ID said the call came in from MLGW's Commercial Resource Center, which is closed on weekends.

MLGW customer representatives do not call requesting payments; those are auto-dialer alerts. Also, cut-off notices are mailed out and MLGW does not accept Green Dot money cards.

MLGW wants you to remember two phone numbers: 901-528-4270, a number for customers to call, and 901-545-2677, which is the MPD number to call if you get a similar call to this one.
