Rescue workers free woman from dangling car

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A guardrail potentially saved many lives Wednesday, after a car going northbound on Memorial Parkway was clipped and crashed, dangling over the Drake Avenue overpass.

Firefighters had to stabilize the car, perched on a steep drop off, before they could rescue the woman trapped inside.

Traffic was backed up to at least Governors Drive as emergency crews attended to the scene. The 54-year-old woman was pulled from the vehicle by first responders and put in an ambulance. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"They were both coming northbound. The truck was in the left lane. She was in the right lane, not the turn lane but the middle lane. He switched lanes in front of her and clipped her front end. She flipped, started over the railing, got caught by the railing and the bushes," said Sergeant Daniel Dean.

Sgt. Dean said drivers on the ground were lucky. "If she'd flipped just a little bit more, we'd have had a bad situation on our hands," he said.

Then came the tricky job of getting the car off the ledge. Police watched warily as wrecking crews gingerly lifted the car up using flatbeds like giant spatulas.

"I figured that was going to be messy, but it worked out pretty good," said Sgt. Dean.

Family members of the victims are concerned for the safety of the community, as are new members of the Clemency Board. CBS 5 Investigates videotaped Huff riding a bike through his Tucson neighborhood. There are no restrictions placed on his proximity to children.
