University employee 'violates' social media policy by tweeting support for rival team

(WMC-TV) - Next time you send that Facebook post or tweet, you might want to make sure it does not violate your employer's social media policy. It is a lesson one Ole Miss employee learned while supporting his favorite team, and it turns out that was not the Rebels.

A strongly worded memo sent to all physical plant employees by the department head left most recipients scratching their heads, possibly even the employee it was directed toward.

The administration was not happy the employee was working the sideline during the Ole Miss / LSU game October 19 and tweeting in support of LSU.

While most loyal Ole Miss fans would consider this blasphemy, most would not realize Ole Miss officials believe it violates a social media policy.

According to the memo anonymously sent to Action News 5 it does, saying in part:

"Lets be clear, The University will never dictate which sporting teams you can support or cheer for. But what we can dictate and fully expect is that if you cannot support The University of Mississippi, particularly while you are on the clock, you will remain neutral and be without comment."

Ole Miss communications director Danny Blantan told the school newspaper, the Daily Mississippian this is more an issue of an employee not doing the job they are being paid to do instead of supporting the team of their choice.
