WARNING: Food stamps now provide $1.40 less per meal

(WMC-TV) - The Mid-South Food Bank is warning local residents about the potential impact that food stamp cuts could have in Shelby County.

The decrease in SNAP benefits kicked in Friday.

After the cuts in budget, food stamp users now have less than $1.40 per meal.

The changes do vary based on income, expenses, and household size.

President and CEO of the Mid-South Food Bank, Estella Mayhue-Greer, warns these changes will impact all of the people receiving SNAP benefits.

"Right here in Shelby County, 44 percent of children live in households that receive snap benefits. So, these are children getting free and reduced lunch at school. They may not have anything to eat over the weekend," stated Mayhue-Greer.

The potential impact for Mississippi is huge as well. The SNAP program provides food for one in four Mississippians.

So far, Congress has shown no sign of reversing the decision to decrease benefits.
