Workshop to teach girls animation and gaming

(WMC-TV) - A local group is working to empower young women as well as build an interest in a technology-centered career path.

This is a room full of ideas, all thanks to an organization called Black Girls Code.

The group hosts workshops like this one which teach girls how to create their own computer game.

Organizers said they are trying to stir interest in young girls and minorities in a group that is often under served in technology fields.

Meka Egwuekwe helped organize Saturday's workshop. Egwuekwe has been working alongside many other volunteers as well. He said it is great to share his passion with others.

"I love to see the expression on all these young lady's faces in terms of the light bulb going off. (When it does, they) see they really can do this that this. It isn't really hard. It isn't just for boys or anyone else. It's for me too," exclaimed Egwuekwe.

Many of the girls love the experience.

"I think it's a once in a lifetime (opportunity) to do before you get to college. Not a lot of people get to do it," declared participant Koryn Smith.

She is taking what they have learned here and is walking away with a better understanding of using their creative skills in a technology filled world.

Community outreach organizer, Nicole Harris, is a firm supporter in the workshop.

"This particular workshop is game development. We've also done mobile applications. So, there's always a new component for them. They're able to take these things back, go home show their parents, go to school, show their friends, and that's another way to build interest," said Harris.
