Late night firework display upsets neighbors

(WMC-TV) - Residents near the Memphis Botanic Gardens are upset after an overnight fireworks display interrupted sleep and scared children.

The Memphis Police Department is looking into the incident after receiving several shocked and angry calls early Sunday morning.

Apparently, the fireworks went off at 12:20 a.m. Sunday.

Memphis Botanic Gardens representative, Renee Kirk, has been answering calls all day regarding the fireworks.

"The people at the wedding asked for it. It wasn't supposed to happen that late," stated Kirk.

Kirk made clear the wedding party had agreed to shoot the fireworks earlier in the day.

"The lady in charge was told a different time. I'm not the coordinator, so I can't say what it was. (I do know) they pushed it back as far as they could," continued Kirk.

On behalf of the Memphis Botanic Gardens, Kirk apologized for the inconvenience caused. They also released the below statement:

We apologize for the disruptions caused by the fireworks this weekend. There were mistakes made with our internal communications relating to this event. We have established additional management control procedures to insure something like this does not happen again.

We do hope that this single event does not over shadow the past nine years of accomplishments dating back to when the garden was a debt ridden after thought to our current position of being a thriving resource for the community and viewed as one of the best public gardens in the U.S.
