Plans underway to bring The Fresh Market to Midtown

(WMC-TV) - The official paperwork has been filed, and the Union Avenue location for The Fresh Market is closer to becoming a reality in Midtown Memphis.

Residents are pleased about the potential outcome.

"I think it's great. We definitely need some kind of grocery store in this area," stated native Amber Colvin.

Memphian Ric Chetter is excited about the possible new location.

"I like The Fresh Market. I do a lot of shopping there. I'm actually kind of happy about it. It saves me going out east," said Ric Chetter.

While the news is exciting to many, The Fresh Market means the closing of Ike's Pharmacy at the 2145 Union Avenue location. The closing is something that many fought against for a while.

Walgreen's Company spokesperson, Emily Hartwig, said the company anticipates finding opportunities for all employees at the Ike's store at their other area locations.

"Any type of new business that comes into the area is certainly a good thing. How many drug stores do you need in this city? So, it's nice to have an opportunity to have it," stated Chetter.

Colvin has seen a lot come in go in the past several years.

"I've lived in this area for about five years. I've seen it come and go from not a whole lot to a lot. I think it's keeping with the spirit of what Overton Square is like," said Colvin.
