Statement from First Tennessee Bank

The following is a statement from communications at First Horizon, which is parent to First Tennessee, in regards to the Action News 5 Investigation on dangerous ATMs in Memphis:

First Tennessee Bank is proud of our 150-year history of earning the trust of Tennessee. That trust is built on a commitment to the safety and security of our customers, including ATM security. That's one reason First Tennessee has the largest market share in Tennessee and one of the highest customer retention rates of any bank in the country. We have also won awards for innovative technology solutions that help customers bank in a way that suits their lifestyles, such as mobile banking. We have a large and convenient branch and ATM network in the Mid-South that makes access easy.

First Tennessee follows all safety standards with regard to ATM location and lighting and height of shrubbery or other possible obstructions – all designed to maximize security. First Tennessee encourages customers to follow these tips when using an ATM:
  • Pay close attention to your surroundings. Select an ATM in a well-lighted, public spot.
  • Maintain awareness throughout the transaction.  Be wary of people trying to help you or of anyone sitting in a parked car nearby.
  • Do not allow people to look over your shoulder as you enter your PIN.
  • Never count cash at the machine.
  • If despite these precautions an assailant demands your money, COMPLY.
