MPD officer accused of breaking into ex-girlfriend's home, threatening man

(WMC-TV) - Early Saturday morning Memphis Police were called to the 800 block of Crossfield Cove.  According to a police affidavit, off-duty MPD officer James Valentine, 33, used a spare key to get into his ex-girlfriend's house.

Most neighbors say they were working when the incident happened.  However, they do not believe anything like this should ever happen.

Once he was inside the house, police say Valentine found the woman and a man in bed together.

Armed with a gun, police say Valentine told the man to get out of bed.  Investigators say he waved the gun at the victim and repeatedly told him to get out.

The man got up and was escorted out of the house by Valentine.  Just a few hours later, police arrived and arrested Valentine.

His girlfriend told officers she tried several times to get the key back from him.  Neighbors say the small community, made up partially of law enforcement, is not happy to hear about the arrest.

Valentine is charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, and aggravated assault domestic violence. As of Sunday night, he is out on $7,500 dollar bond.

Valentine is set to appear in court Tuesday morning.  He has been employed with Memphis police since April 2002.  He is assigned to the Appling Farms Station.

Valentine remains on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
