Mississippi Co. first 'Veteran of the Year' served in WWII

BLYTHEVILLE, AR (KAIT)- The first ever Mississippi County Veteran of the Year award was presented at the annual Blytheville Veterans Day service Monday. Blytheville resident, 99-year-old Frank R. Anderson, accepted the first Mississippi County Veteran of the year award in front of family, friends and the community.

"It was indeed an exceptional honor," said Anderson.

Sgt. Frank R. Anderson was one of the first U.S. Soldiers to experience first-hand the horrors of the German concentration camp in Dachau.

"I looked in the doors and I saw what I saw, I couldn't believe it," said Anderson. "I said to myself, If there is a God on earth how could he permit this?"

Anderson had an opportunity to go to the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial.It was there he witnessed justice given to those responsible for the horrific images he still remembers.

"I looked at the very people who started all that, and I looked at Herman Goering and the others," said Anderson. "I saw justice being done."

However, not all memories are filled with sadness. One holds a special place in his heart. It was May 9th. 1945 and for the first time, in a long time he felt peace.

"Across the river were the Russians, and my General walked up to the middle of the bridge and shook hands with General Berkov from the Russian Budapest Corp, said Anderson. "It was the end of the war."

Anderson said WWII truly impacted his life. It also showed him what it really means to be an American.

"It makes you realize we do have a wonderful country," said Anderson. "It was worth fighting for."
