TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police dispatch has confirmed a student was struck in the Auto Mechanic Shop at Whitmer High School Wednesday.

Toledo Fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld confirms a student was transported to a nearby hospital from the school with head injuries around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Washington Local Schools released a statement reporting that the student was injured after an oil change was completed.

"One student started the vehicle, unaware that a classmate had bent back down in front of it to check for oil leakage," their statement said. "The truck jumped forward, and the student sustained injuries when he was pinned against a worktable."

School officials say a teacher who is also an EMT, along with the school nurse, responded to the accident and attended to the student until an ambulance arrived.

"While the incident was extremely unfortunate, I couldn't be any prouder of the rapid response of our staff and the emergency personnel who worked together to provide the best medical attention possible," Superintendent Patrick Hickey said.  "Our school community is indeed a family, and your prayers are appreciated during the student's recovery."

The school's statement also said counselors will be available Thursday to address any concerns for students and the district will review its safety policies.

There is still no word on the severity of injuries the student sustained.
