Team, town get ready for Thursday night Clemson game

PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. (WYFF) — The eighth-ranked Clemson Tigers host Georgia tech on Thursday night at Death Valley.

It's Clemson's first Thursday night home game since 2002.

University closes early

Because the game is on a school day, Clemson University said they will close offices at 2 p.m. Thursday and classes after 12:15 p.m. will be rescheduled or deferred. Gameday parking lots will open at 2 p.m.

Schools dismiss early

Pickens County schools will dismiss early Thursday to avoid traffic congestion.

School employees will be required to work their normal hours.

District officials anticipate that traffic in the Clemson area and around U.S. 123 in Easley will make it impossible for buses to take students home in a reasonable amount of time.

The school district said it also was concerned for student drivers in the traffic.

After-school activities will be held based on the decision by each principal.

The Game

This is the final ACC game of the season for both the Tigers and Yellow Jackets and both teams still have plenty to play for. Clemson is still in the mix for a BCS bowl bid while Georgia Tech still has a chance to win the ACC's Coastal Division and play for the conference championship.

"It's November," said Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney. "We will all be judged on what we do from here. No one will talk about us beating Georgia or the consistency of our program. They will talk about what we do in these last three games in November."

Georgia Tech is frustrating opponent for every team they play. Head coach Paul Johnson continues to run the triple option offense which has given defenses fits since his arrival in Atlanta in 2007. Johnson's team is averaging over 311 yards per game on the ground but the Yellow Jackets aren't afraid to throw the ball either. Georgia Tech averages more than 19 yards per pass play which ranks second in the country. Their offense gets a bulk of the credit but Tech's defense is also a force to be reckoned with. The Yellow Jackets are 12th nationally in total defense.

"You have to get something out of your possessions against them," said Tigers quarterback Tajh Boyd. "They don't give you many opportunities so when you get one you have to make sure you get a touchdown, a field goal, or great field position."

Thursday night will be a special night for Tajh Boyd as he plays his final ACC home game. Boyd has a chance to make it a record-setting night. He needs just eight completions to break Charlie Whitehurst's school record for completions. It will be the 51st record Tajh Boyd has either tied or eclipsed in his decorated Clemson career.

Clemson hosts Georgia Tech on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at Clemson's Memorial Stadium (Death Valley).

The game between the Tigers and Yellow Jackets will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
