(WMC-TV) - Adult entertainment establishments could soon be allowed in a popular Mid-South college town.

There will be three readings before a decision is made on the adult entertainment ordinance issue, but the thought of it in Oxford is drawing angst.

"I would say we should stay away from that we don't need that here," said resident Becca Berger. "I don't think that really needs to be here. It's just gonna draw on a negative crowd."

The Oxford Planning Commission approved an ordinance that would regulate sexually-orientated businesses. That ordinance would give the commission control over where the businesses could open and restrict alcohol sales.

"We had in the last few months, requests, somebody gauging interest, asking how to pull a permit for an adult entertainment establishment," said city attorney Paul Watkins.

Watkins said this inquiry put them on alert. In 2004, zoning codes were rewritten for the city of Oxford and did not reference adult entertainment permits. The ordinance would also set a minimum distance from churches and schools.
