(WMC-TV) - The University of Memphis may eliminate out-of-state tuition.

According to U of M administrators, the interim president, Brad Martin, is meeting with other leaders at the university Monday to discuss the possible change.

In a recent interview, Martin said enrollment and graduation rates will increase if out-of-state tuition is eliminated.

Freshman Aaron Canales disagreed with that assessment.

"If we lower the amount of talented people from in-state, it would lower their incentive to come here," said Canales.

Another freshman, Breanna Griffon, is concerned about the possible impact this would have.

"I think a lot of people are intimidated by paying as much as they do just to get the education they feel like they need," stated Griffon.

Officials confirmed the university is planning to enter into a student recruiting effort and enlarge its online course offerings. They are hoping these two efforts will bring more students to the campus.
