(WMC-TV) - Democratic nominee Raumesh Akbari was elected to fill the empty House of Representatives District 91 seat left open by the late State Representative Lois DeBerry.
Voters in district 91 voted Thursday on the ballot measure in the special election. Akbari ran against Libertarian candidate James "Jim" Tomasik.
Eighty-nine percent of voters chose Akbari.
Akbari's interests sit in pre-K education, better health care for senior citizens, blighted neighborhoods, unemployment, and environmental injustice.
"I realize that I stand on the shoulders of a great leader, and it is an honor to continue her legacy of service to the community," she said on her website.
State Representative Lois DeBerry died in the summer after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
