MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Drivers in the eastern part of Shelby County will be happy to hear that the final leg of Highway 385 is now open, making travel a lot easier.

Former Tennessee Governor Winfield Dunn cut the ribbon Friday on the newest section of State Route 385, named in his honor.

"Well, its an extreme honor and right here in my home county, it just makes it so very nice," said Dunn.

Dunn says he hopes the new roadway will alleviate traffic on side roads in the entire area.

The road runs from Highway 57, which is also Poplar Avenue, in Shelby County to Macon Road in Fayette County.

"I live in Fayette County. I work in Fayette County. This is going to be a great thing for us," said Patti Krepala, Oakland Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Krepala says in addition to making it easier to get to Collierville, the new eight mile section of roadway will also be the breeding ground for future residential and business communities.

"This is going to be a great connection to connect everyone in Oakland to the other side of the county. It'll have huge economic benefits for us," added Krepala.
