(WMC-TV)- A new record was made this year for the hard working and caring staff at The Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County. The group has helped 1,000 animals find new homes.

To put it into perspective, the Humane Society has made on average as of this month, 90 adoptions a month. Due to the high adoption rate, the Humane Society was able to help more animals than ever before.

"Since we are taking in and caring for more animals, that is the largest contributor to our increased adoptions," said HSMSC spokeswoman Katie Pemberton. "But it's also a combination of many other things, including having an amazing, efficient, dedicated team in place, changing our heart-worm treatment protocol so that animals leave the building more quickly ... But still are treated for their heart worms [and] being more strategic about physically where our animals go in out building."

They also have dedicated staff members working with animals on house training and behavior to make the animals more attractive for adoptions. The HSMSC has increased marketing efforts, a large social media awareness. Even adoption campaigns like 12 strays of Christmas, 36-Hour Adoptathon, and Adoption is The New Black have factored into their successful adoption rate.

"Some campaigns are more successful than others. When we reduced adoption fees for all cats over nine months earlier this year. we adopted out eight times as many cats as usual," added Pemberton.

Even during their 36-Hour Adoptathon, the Humane Society was able adopt out 156 animal.

The last few years adoption numbers are as followed have not even come closed to this new record:

  • 2012: 680
  • 2011: 637
  • 2010: 677
