Research: Car accidents increase near Thanksgiving

(WMC-TV) - Drivers hitting the roads for Thanksgiving have a greater risk getting in a accident, according to one major insurance company.

New data from the Progressive Corporation shows automobile accidents spike the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

This day has been dubbed "Black Wednesday" because car accidents increase 17 percent between 8 p.m. that evening and 3 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning.

Progressive found parking and rear-end accidents increased by 27 percent on Black Wednesday and property damage claims increase by 14 percent during that window of time.

According to Progressive's research, drivers in Maryland, Oregon, Ohio, Illinois, and North Carolina have a higher risk of accidents since 2011.
