Art student, shocked over murder-suicide, remembers Amy Lange

(WMC-TV) - A large group of students and parents changed their Facebook profile pictures to the Millington Central High School mascot, coming together over unimaginable loss.

Darlene Newman, a former middle school art teacher, was keeping up with her license when she took a class last spring at the Memphis College of Art. Her teacher was Amy Lange.

"I was dreading the class because it was survey and it was history but it turned out that she made it very interesting," said Newman.

Newman's in-home studio was closed Tuesday.

"I was in shock, disbelief," Newman described the moment she learned that her former art teacher had been shot and killed.

In addition to teaching at the Memphis College of Art, Lange was a teacher at Millington Central High School.

Newman said Lange was very proud of her students.

"She talked about them all the time and she was proud about how they were getting scholarships, art scholarships to colleges in New York and other states," explained Newman.

Lange and her estranged husband, Mark Perry, were found dead Monday in her Lucy home in what police describe as a murder-suicide.

Newman says Lange left her mark.

"Just to let people know how passionate she was every day about life," she said. "Every time I went into the class she would spark something in me that would inspire me to just be passionate about what I'm doing."

The school district says Superintendent Dorsey Hopson and grief counselors were on campus on Tuesday.
