Small Mid-South business owners optimistic despite national statistics

(WMC-TV) - National stats say this Christmas season is not quite what economists planned. But when it comes to local businesses in Memphis and the Mid-South, things are looking up.

Hollywood Furniture is a staple in North Memphis. After all, the store has just about anything you'd want.

"Doors, lawn mowers, floors, weed eaters," said customer Patrick Morrow, who has shopped at Hollywood Furniture for several years. "This is the closest place I can come to buy my tools and then the only thing I have to do is take it to the house and get to work."

This furniture turned hardware store has been here for 89 years.

Business owner Bart Garey says he has lived through the ups and downs of the economy

"It's definitely up from what it was last year, last couple of years. We had a good November which is encouraging going into December," Garey said.

According to the Tennessee Small Business Development Center, small businesses have seen a revenue increase of 22 percent this year alone.

On top of that good news, the Mid-South has also seen an overall increase in new family owned businesses this year.

"We're encouraged. When you've been in it as long as we've been in it, you tend to be resilient, try to diversify," Garey added.

Small business success, says Garey, does not come without a cost.

He has had to let two of his employees go in the past several years just to keep costs down.

But, he says he has not had to close his doors and does not plan to.

"I'm glad they still here," added customer Antonio Biggs.

According to the US Census, small businesses in the Memphis Metro area had over 3.5 billion dollars in revenue in the past five years.
