Collierville Municipal School District selects its first superintendent

(WMC-TV) - According to Shelby County Schools, John Aitken was selected as the superintendent for the Collierville Municipal School District.

Collierville leaders say there is a contract on the table, but in order to solidify the deal the Collierville School Board must approve the contract.

The former Shelby County Schools superintendent has a proven track record, so it is no surprise he was openly sought after by at least four municipalities planning to form their own school districts.

Germantown, Arlington, and Lakeland had their eyes Aitken, but he ultimately chose to lead the Collierville School District in a new era of education for the Memphis suburb.

Last week, Action News 5 learned Aitken dropped out as a finalist to be a superintendent in Arlington and Germantown.

The deal is not final yet. It needs the Collierville School Board's approval.

Of course, the agreement leaves other districts with the task of finding a superintendent.

Aitken left the unified district in March through a buy-out.

In June, Collierville leaders hired Aitken as their schools' consultant.

Since the Collierville School Board must approve the contract Collierville, officials were reluctant to talk about the deal. But just after noon Thursday, Shelby County Schools tweeted, "Congratulations to John Aitken on his selection as Superintendent of the Collierville Municipal School District!"

Lakeland and Germantown have already begun vetting candidates for their superintendent positions, indicating that Aitken's decision to stick with Collierville is no surprise.
