(WMC-TV) - Officials removed one of 52 so-called unsafe bus companies from the road in Memphis after a nationwide sting.

The buses in GWC Enterprises' parking lot on Crump Road are curbed Thursday following an eight month-long investigation.

Horrific charter bus crashes in the Memphis area over the years raised questions about safety, which is something the U.S. Department of Transportation says it is more committed than ever to improving.

Specific violations regarding GWC were not revealed.

The feds said in a statement, "Company-wide failures to adequately maintain their buses, inadequate drug and alcohol driver testing programs and widespread hours-of-service violations were among the reasons companies were shut down."

"We spend a lot of money doing things the right way," said Memphis-based Crown Charters and Tours president John Wilson. "You know, the regulations are put into place, and the only reason they're there is for the safety of the passengers and the traveling public."

Wilson says rigorous standards are the cost of doing business.

GWC did not return Action News 5's call for comment.

The Department of Transportation says you should "look before you book" by using information on its website or Facebook page.
