Drawing for 2nd largest Mega Millions jackpot has ticketholders hopeful

(WMC-TV) - Mid-Southerners, like others around the country, are snatching up last minute lottery tickets, in hopes of taking home the $400 million prize Friday night.

The Mega Millions jackpot has rolled over 20 times. And despite the odds tickets are going fast because at some point perhaps tonight someone will collect all that cash.

The multi-state jackpot has been building since October 1. If someone were to win the $400 million on December 14, it would no doubt be a very merry Christmas.

"My mom and dad worked so hard their whole life so they deserve something, so I'd definitely try to help my family out if I won," said Joel Lee.

This is the second largest Mega Millions jackpot in history and the fifth largest jackpot of any game in U.S. history.

Walid Sakaan would spend his winnings on the people suffering in his homeland of Syria. Raffe's Deli is holding a fundraiser this weekend in Memphis but a $400 million jackpot would go a lot farther.

"We're for the people there and trying ,there's so many victims," said Sakaan.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot is one in 259 million. In fact, you are more likely to get hit by a comment than win the jackpot on any given day.

"Yeah, I believe that 100 percent," said Lee. "I don't think I'm gonna win at all but, you never know."

The largest Mega Millions jackpot was $656 million. It was split three ways in Illinois, Kansas, and Maryland in April 2012. With the surge in sales Friday, the $400 million dollar jackpot is likely to grow even larger before the 10 p.m. drawing.
